“Now, I say to you today my friends, even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: / we hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.”
Martin Luther King Jr., I Have a Dream, 1963.
Just a helpful reminder that most Banks and Federal Offices will be closed this Monday, January 17th, 2011, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
The City of Parkland offices will also be closed on Monday in observance of the holiday. However, The City of Parkland’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Planning Committee is pleased to announce the City’s upcoming MLK, Jr. Celebration!
This event will be held on Friday, January 14, 2011, at the Parkland YMCA from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. All Parkland parents, students, teachers and community members are cordially invited to attend this event.
Students within the City of Parkland have been invited to participate in an essay/poetry and poster contest. This year’s keynote speaker is Broward County’s Circuit Court Judge Elijah Williams. Judge Williams is a former Air Force Captain. He currently serves in Broward’s Juvenile Court and has tried over 250 cases.
In addition to having Judge Elijah Williams, the Tuskegee Airmen, who were the keynote speakers last year, have also been invited to join us at this event as honorary guests. All participants, their families, Parkland residents, community members, and teachers are encouraged to attend this FREE family and community event.
